Triad Wedge Welder - Wedge Maintenance Tips

Posted by Steve Brown on Jan 1st 2013

As you know, the hot wedge in your triad wedge welder is one of the more expensive consumable parts - even at our much lower prices. Use the tips below to extend the life of your wedge - saving money in the process. For the record, the tips below apply to maintenance of Triad or Spec wedges.

You know that gunk that builds up on your Triad hot wedge?

Do yourself a favour: Never ever use the wire brush the manufacturer sends along with your shiny new Triad wedge welder to remove build-up. While the wire brush and elbow grease will remove the residue - the same combination will also abrade your aluminum wedge. And why on earth would you want to do that?

Try this instead: Crank it.

That’s right: Crank it. Increase the temperature of your wedge to 510 Celsius. That’s about the same temperature as the surface of the sun - so be sure to put your machine out of harm’s way while you go grab yourself a coffee and take five (about 15mins really).  By the time you’ve finished your coffee, the residue will have burnt itself off. All that should remain is grey flakey bits coming away from the hot wedge. Give your wedge a blast of 100 psi or more of compressed air and your wedge will be ready for your next series of welds.

One more thing: Check your Wedge Lead Bracket

Now, if you’re serious about extending the life of your hot wedge even further - and ensuring your warranty stays intact - be sure to always install a wedge lead bracket (part #300040) every time you change out a wedge. It’s there to keep the braided wire enclosure in place and protect the wires inside.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by and read my scribe. I hope you find the tips useful. By all means, if you have any tips and tricks of your own and you would like to share with other Triad and Spec Wedge Welder owners, this is the place so please feel free to comment below - or contact us.
